Therapeutic Yarns Consulting was co-founded by Dr Abby-Rose Cox and Samuel McWaters to strengthen culturally appropriate mental health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing systems across Australia.

Therapeutic Yarns is an aboriginal owned consultancy delivering research, evaluation, service design, governance and professional support grounded in community, culture, and accountability.

We work relationally, ethically and with integrity, ensuring that organisations build systems that are culturally grounded, sustainable and community informed.

Dr Abby-Rose Cox, PhD

Social and Emotional Wellbeing Researcher & Consultant

Dr Abby-Rose Cox is a Nimanburu and Kija woman from the Kimberley and an expert in Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB), culturally informed practice and Indigenous research methodologies.

She holds a PhD in SEWB and Education and brings experience across First Nations organisations, education systems and the university sector as an academic, lecturer and course coordinator.

  • Culturally grounded service development



Her work balances community accountability with strategic clarity. She is known for warmth, integrity and outputs-driven leadership.



Samuel McWaters

Clinical Psychologist, Board-Approved Supervisor & Consultant

Samuel McWaters is a registered Clinical Psychologist and Board-Approved Supervisor with extensive rural and remote experience across the Kimberley region.

He has worked within:

  • Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCHOs)
  • NGOs
  • Private practice
  • Remote community settings

His areas of expertise include:

  • Social and Emotional Wellbeing
  • Developmental and complex trauma
  • Cross-cultural psychology
  • Clinical supervision and workforce support


Samuel’s work is relational, trauma-informed and influenced by psychodynamic psychotherapy. Clients value his steady, reflective and culturally respectful approach.
